Traditional slitting machine control schemes utilize a large motor to drive the take-up and unwinding shafts. Magnetic powder clutches are added to these shafts, and the resistance generated is controlled by adjusting the current in the clutches, thereby controlling the surface tension of the material.
Magnetic powder clutches and brakes are specialized automated actuators that transmit torque through magnetic powder filling the working gaps. Changing the magnetic current alters the magnetic state of the powder, thus regulating the transmitted torque. They can be used for stepless speed regulation from zero to synchronous speed, suitable for high-speed fine-tuning and low-to-medium power speed control systems. They are also used in unwinding or rewinding tension control systems that adjust torque by regulating the current to ensure constant tension during winding.
